Vitalising clinical research in emerging markets of sub-Saharan Africa
Africa has a young and most rapidly growing populations in the world. With a current population of more than 1 billion people, it is in fact expected to become the demographic giant of the 21st century. During the past two decades, the continent has shown considerable improvements in health outcomes. However, it still carries the highest burden of disease worldwide (see the video below, Burden of poverty related infectious disease in sub-saharan Africa by EDCTP). With its diverse populations and settings both endemic to wide range of infectious diseases and at the same time an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases attributed to population ageing, and life-style changes related to urbanisation and globalisation, clinical research and development in the African region is needed to address these challenges.

Network models in educational and research cooperation between Europe and Africa are often proposed as an efficient mean for human capacity development and for the creation of high quality scientific institutions which ultimately contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals in the south. Julius Clinical is the research organization that has a strong and committed network of academic leaders and investigators around the world in a variety of therapeutic areas. Julius Global Health is part of the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands and carries out research and educational activities in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. With these extensive research backgrounds, Julius Clinical and Julius Global Health established Africa Clinical in 2017, a network of European and African investigators and institutes who are committed to improve healthcare, health and equity in health in sub-Saharan Africa.
